Moving back to India: the complete timeline
Every task from "we've decided" to your 90th day in India — why it matters, the steps, the documents. This is the knowledge base inside our LandingKit iOS app, published free. The app personalizes it to your family and computes your deadlines; this page is the whole map.
You've decided — The moment the move becomes real — foundations first
Confirm your India status: OCI, visa, or citizen · 110 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Everything downstream — property, banking, how long you can stay — depends on your status. OCI holders have near-resident rights; H-1B/GC holders moving back re-enter as citizens if they held Indian passports, or need OCI if naturalized abroad.
STEPS
- If you're a foreign citizen of Indian origin without OCI: apply now — processing takes 8–16 weeks
- Check every family member including kids born abroad (they need OCI too)
- Renew Indian passports if any are within 12 months of expiry
DOCUMENTS
Passports (all family) · Birth certificates for kids born abroad · Marriage certificate if spouse claims OCI through you
Plan your RNOR window before you book flights · 100 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Most returning NRIs qualify as Resident-but-Not-Ordinarily-Resident for ~2–3 years — foreign income largely stays outside Indian tax. Your ARRIVAL DATE determines which fiscal years you get. Landing April vs March can be worth lakhs.
STEPS
- Count your days-in-India for the past 7 fiscal years
- Model RNOR eligibility with a cross-border CA before fixing the move date
- Sequence foreign asset sales (RSUs, home) against the window
DOCUMENTS
Passport stamps / travel history · Foreign income summary
Decide what happens to 401(k)/RRSP, brokerage and the house · 90 days before landingfrom the USfrom Canada
WHY IT MATTERS
You generally can KEEP US retirement accounts as a non-resident (confirm your broker's policy — some close accounts on foreign addresses). Selling your home after moving can change capital-gains exclusions. These decisions are worth a paid hour with a cross-border tax advisor.
STEPS
- Ask each brokerage/401(k) provider their non-resident policy in writing
- Decide sell-vs-rent for your current home against the primary-residence exclusion clock
- Keep one US/Canada bank account + credit card alive (you'll need US credit history if you ever return)
DOCUMENTS
Account statements · Home purchase records
Shortlist schools and learn the admission calendar · 90 days before landingwith kids
WHY IT MATTERS
Indian academic year runs April–March; international schools admit rolling but fill early. Mid-year entry is possible but choices shrink. In the GIFT corridor: DPS Gandhinagar, Podar International, in-township options at Shantigram; universities (Deakin, Wollongong) inside GIFT for older kids.
STEPS
- Shortlist 3 schools per child; email admissions with your landing month
- Ask specifically about mid-year seats and assessment requirements
- Collect transcripts + teacher recommendations before leaving — much harder remotely
DOCUMENTS
Report cards (2–3 years) · Transfer certificate from current school · Immunization records
Decide: buy before landing, or rent-first · 80 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Rent-first is the lower-regret default — you learn the corridor before committing. But if you're buying, starting from abroad is fine: NRIs/OCIs buy freely under FEMA, and a POA can complete registration without you flying.
STEPS
- Read the corridor value ladder and pick your micro-market shortlist
- If buying: verify RERA on every project; start the landed-cost math
- If renting: budget ₹35–60k/month for a good 3BHK in the corridor; line up 2–3 options for landing week viewings
DOCUMENTS
Budget worksheet
90 days out — Money rails and paperwork that take the longest
Open NRE/NRO accounts (or plan re-designation) · 75 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Your money needs Indian rails before you do. NRE = foreign earnings, freely repatriable. NRO = India-source income. After you become resident, these re-designate to resident accounts — but opening them NOW while abroad is far easier (banks have NRI desks for exactly this).
STEPS
- Open NRE + NRO with a major bank that has GIFT City/Gandhinagar branches
- Set up the remittance path and test it with a small transfer (bank transfers avoid the US 1% cash-remittance excise)
- If you have existing NRE FDs: understand the re-designation timeline post-return
DOCUMENTS
Passport + visa/OCI · Overseas address proof · PAN (apply if you don't have one — needed for everything)
PAN sorted; Aadhaar planned for after arrival · 70 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
PAN you can get from abroad and you'll need it for property, banking, everything. Aadhaar requires physical presence + biometrics AND (for NRIs) you can enroll on arrival with an Indian address — it unlocks SIMs, subsidies, and half of Indian digital life.
STEPS
- Apply for PAN online if missing (2–3 weeks)
- Diarize Aadhaar enrollment for week 2–3 after landing (need local address proof first)
- Link PAN-Aadhaar once both exist — mandatory
DOCUMENTS
Passport · OCI card if applicable · Photos
Buy Indian health insurance BEFORE you land — especially for parents · 75 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Indian insurers impose waiting periods (2–4 years for pre-existing conditions). Every month you delay starting the clock is a month of exposure. For parents 60+, options narrow sharply and premiums jump — start theirs first. Your US/Canada coverage ends at the border.
STEPS
- Buy a family floater from a major insurer with the waiting-period clock starting now
- For parents: senior-specific plans or a super top-up over a base policy
- Keep travel insurance covering the transition month
DOCUMENTS
Medical history summaries · Passport/PAN
Book international movers + learn Transfer of Residence rules · 60 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
India's Transfer of Residence (TOR) concession lets returning residents import used household goods largely duty-free (conditions: you've lived abroad 2+ years, goods owned 6+ months, shipped within limits). Get this wrong and customs gets expensive.
STEPS
- Get 3 quotes from international movers experienced in India TOR shipments
- Inventory everything; photograph high-value items; keep purchase receipts for electronics
- Decide what NOT to ship — appliances on 110V, cars (effectively prohibitive), furniture that costs less to rebuy
DOCUMENTS
Passport showing 2+ years abroad · Detailed inventory list · Receipts for items under 6 months (they'll be dutiable)
If buying: run the shortlist properly · 45 days before landingbuying
WHY IT MATTERS
90 days is enough to do this right from abroad: RERA verification, video walkthroughs, price negotiation, and POA prep if you'll register before landing.
STEPS
- Three-project shortlist with RERA certificates read (not brochures)
- Video walkthroughs + our honest read on each
- If registering remotely: execute POA at the consulate (notarize + apostille), adjudicate in Gujarat within 3 months
DOCUMENTS
PAN · NRE/NRO account · POA draft from your lawyer
30 days out — Cut the cords cleanly
File the exit-year tax plan (both countries) · 25 days before landingfrom the USfrom Canada
WHY IT MATTERS
Your final US/Canada year is a part-year return with traps (residency termination dates, state taxes that follow you, RSU vesting after departure). India will start taxing you as resident soon after. One cross-border CA who sees both sides prevents double-tax pain.
STEPS
- Confirm your US/Canada residency termination date strategy
- For Canada: understand departure tax (deemed disposition) BEFORE you leave
- Set calendar reminders for both countries' filing deadlines next year
DOCUMENTS
Brokerage statements · RSU/option schedules
Mail forwarding, subscriptions, and the account purge · 20 days before landingfrom the USfrom Canada
WHY IT MATTERS
Future-you needs a US/Canada mailing address (bank statements, tax docs, the odd check). Virtual mailbox services solve this. Everything else: cancel or switch billing to the surviving credit card.
STEPS
- Set up a virtual mailbox (scans your mail); update banks/brokerages to it
- USPS/Canada Post forwarding as backup
- Cancel utilities, insurance, memberships with end dates; keep one card + one bank alive
Confirm school admissions + collect the document folder · 21 days before landingwith kids
WHY IT MATTERS
Schools will hold seats only so long. The physical document folder (originals + apostilled copies) is the single thing families most regret not preparing.
STEPS
- Confirm seats in writing; pay what's needed to hold them
- Assemble per-child folder: transcripts, transfer certificate, immunizations, passport copies, photos
- Book any required entrance assessments for landing week
DOCUMENTS
Everything from the 90-day school task, now as originals
Medical records + 90-day medication supply · 15 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Prescriptions don't transfer across borders. Many US drug names differ in India (and some controlled substances need import paperwork). Carry records; refill locally once you have an Indian doctor.
STEPS
- Download full medical + dental + vision records for the family
- Get 90-day supplies of all medications + doctor's letters for anything controlled
- Note Indian generic equivalents with your doctor's help
DOCUMENTS
Prescriptions · Doctor letters
Plan the big transfer (don't wing the FX) · 15 days before landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Moving life savings is an FX decision worth planning: rate alerts, splitting transfers, using the NRE rail. A 1% better average rate on $500k is $5,000.
STEPS
- Decide how much moves now vs stays invested abroad
- Use bank/remittance-service rate alerts; consider laddering transfers
- Route through NRE (bank transfer — exempt from the US 1% cash excise; keeps repatriation clean)
Landing week — The seven-day sprint
Indian SIM on day 1–2 · day 2 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Nothing works without an Indian mobile number — OTPs run the country. Airport SIMs work but store visits with passport + local address proof get full KYC done properly.
STEPS
- Jio/Airtel store with passport, OCI/visa, photos, and local address proof (hotel/lease letter works initially)
- Keep your US number alive on an eSIM or port to a cheap VoIP plan (US banks will text OTPs there for years)
DOCUMENTS
Passport · OCI/visa · Photos · Address proof
Lock housing (lease registration + society formalities) · day 7 after landingrent-first
WHY IT MATTERS
If renting first: close a lease in week 1 — it becomes your address proof for everything else (Aadhaar, bank re-designation, school). Leave-and-licence agreements should be registered; societies want police verification forms.
STEPS
- Close from your pre-landing shortlist; negotiate 11-month leave-and-licence
- Register the agreement; keep certified copies — this is your master address proof
- Complete society/police verification forms same week
DOCUMENTS
Passport/OCI · PAN · Photos · Deposit funds in NRO/NRE
Bank branch visit: activate, re-designate timeline, get the debit cards · day 5 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Physical branch visit with your new address gets accounts fully functional, cheque books issued, and starts the NRE/NRO→resident re-designation conversation on the right footing.
STEPS
- Visit the branch where you opened NRE/NRO; update Indian address
- Ask for the re-designation checklist (you'll execute it once resident status is clear)
- Set up UPI the same day — India runs on it
DOCUMENTS
Passport · Lease/address proof · PAN
Kids' school joining formalities · day 7 after landingwith kids
WHY IT MATTERS
The sooner kids are in routine, the sooner the family stabilizes — every relocation study says the same thing.
STEPS
- Submit the document folder; complete assessments
- Uniforms, transport route registration, fee schedule setup
- Meet class teachers; ask about transition support for kids from abroad
DOCUMENTS
The per-child folder from 30-days-out
First 30 days — Becoming officially local
Aadhaar enrollment · day 30 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
With a local address proof in hand, enroll — it unlocks SIM upgrades, DigiLocker, subsidies, and smooth KYC everywhere. NRIs/OCIs can enroll on arrival (no 182-day wait for enrollment itself).
STEPS
- Book an Aadhaar Seva Kendra slot; carry passport + registered lease
- Enroll every family member (kids too)
- Once issued: link PAN, update bank KYC
DOCUMENTS
Passport · Registered lease/utility bill · PAN
Driving licence: use the IDP window, start the Indian DL · day 40 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Your foreign licence + International Driving Permit covers you temporarily (up to 1 year with IDP), but an Indian DL is the real answer — and the test queue takes weeks, so start early.
STEPS
- Apply at the RTO with address proof + passport (some states accept a smooth foreign-licence conversion path; Gujarat requires the standard process — verify current rules)
- Book the learner's + driving test slots now; they lag by weeks
- Meanwhile: drive on IDP or use drivers (₹15–20k/month full-time — genuinely consider it)
DOCUMENTS
Foreign licence + IDP · Aadhaar/lease · Passport photos
The household stack: help, water, gas, internet · day 30 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
The India advantage is services — but week-2-you doesn't know the going rates. Corridor norms: cook ₹4–8k, cleaning ₹3–6k, driver ₹15–20k full-time. Fiber internet installs in days.
STEPS
- Society WhatsApp groups + neighbors = the real hiring network; verify with ID + police verification form
- Set up piped gas/cylinder, drinking water, fiber (Jio/Airtel same-week)
- UPI-autopay everything
DOCUMENTS
Lease · Aadhaar helps everywhere
Wheels: buy, lease, or subscribe · day 45 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
You cannot practically import your car (duties ~100%+). New car waitlists exist for popular models; the used market and subscription services (long-term rentals) bridge the gap.
STEPS
- Short-term: subscription/long-term rental or a driver arrangement
- Buying: needs PAN + address proof; loans possible against NRE/NRO history
- Registration follows your Aadhaar address
DOCUMENTS
PAN · Address proof · DL/IDP
First 90 days — The long-tail — money, tax, roots
Confirm your tax residency status + RNOR election readiness · day 80 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Your first India filing after return is where the RNOR planning pays off — or gets wasted. Day counts matter; keep a travel log.
STEPS
- Engage an Indian CA familiar with returnee cases (not just any CA)
- Log India days meticulously (an app note is fine — just keep it)
- Map which foreign income stays exempt under RNOR and for how long
DOCUMENTS
Travel history · Foreign income statements
Restart investing — the India stack · day 85 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Your resident status changes what you can hold: resident demat/MF KYC, and note US PFIC rules punish US persons holding Indian mutual funds — if you remain a US taxpayer (GC/citizen), get advice BEFORE buying Indian MFs.
STEPS
- Convert/open resident demat + MF KYC after re-designation
- US persons: understand PFIC before touching Indian mutual funds
- Revisit the property plan with 90 days of ground truth — the corridor will look different from inside
DOCUMENTS
Re-designated bank accounts · PAN/Aadhaar
Build the circle deliberately · day 90 after landing
WHY IT MATTERS
Returnee regret correlates with isolation, not logistics. The corridor has returnee density — use it.
STEPS
- Join society groups, returnee/NRI meetups, kids' activity circles
- The Belvedere/club memberships if in the township belt
- Say yes to everything for 90 days
The 90-day review: rent→buy decision point · day 90 after landingrent-first
WHY IT MATTERS
If you rented first, you now know the corridor. This is when buying becomes an informed decision instead of a leap.
STEPS
- Re-run the value ladder with your lived preferences
- Get the current tracker + our honest read on your shortlist
- If buying: you're now a resident buyer — simpler paperwork than NRI purchase
